music, fashion, film
Inspired by Charli XCX’s 8th studio album, Music, Fashion, Film’s original anti-marketing approach and minimal black-and-white cover, I wanted to explore what the artwork could look like if it incorporated photography of Charli herself while maintaining the same detached feeling as the original.
album re-design ☆ concept art
I pulled imagery from existing photoshoots and color-graded them with a dark, neutral tone. I intentionally cropped the images so Charli’s face isn’t fully visible, allowing the photography to feel more abstract and aligned with the album’s detachment from her usual pop aesthetic. This allowed me to introduce her presence without shifting too far from the original artwork, which does not feature her at all.
I paired the imagery with simple typography and experimented with placement and negative space to keep the design minimal and image-forward. The sans serif type also draws inspiration from brat, her previous album.
The final result is an alternative take on the album cover that introduces photography of Charli while preserving the minimalism and anonymity of the original concept. Full images of Charli are revealed on the CDs and throughout the inside case spread to contrast the more cropped exterior.
